On March 23, 2007 WomenStories held Share the Breast Cancer Journey, an event to honor WomenStories ‘stars’ (women in the video series) and to launch their newly minted DVD. Eighteen stars attended and were able to meet one another for the first time despite having been in many of the same videos. |
Each ticket paid for a DVD to be given to an organization that might not be able to afford it. 20 DVDs have been sent to Galveston Texas (see newsletter article on D’Feet Breast Cancer) and additional DVDs to local organizations such as Good Neighbors in Buffalo, Breast Cancer Network of Western New York, and to many organizations in nearby counties.
Stars, sponsors and WomenStories board members sipped champagne and listened to saxophone music at a reception that preceded the larger event. Maryalice Demler from Channel 2 made opening comments, followed by Mimi Dow, WomenStories founder, who gave a short history of the project. Roslyn Romanowski, MD, president of the WomenStories board, gave a brief talk describing her use of WomensStoires tapes to support the breast cancer patients in her practice.
The focal point of the evening occurred when all the survivors in the tapes were called one by one to come up the stairs to be honored and to receive a small gold star engraved with WS that had been especially made for them by Robertson and Bach Jewelers. A line of twenty women extended from the floor of the hall, to the landing on the stairs and beyond. By sharing their stories, these women made the series the unique and powerful tool that it is, one that comforts, informs and inspires newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
This wonderful evening could not have occurred without the tireless efforts of the committee chairman, Leslie Russell, and her WomenStories accomplice, Karin Krasevac-Lenz, neither of whom slept for at least two months. They and their devoted committee members made the evening the success it was. We are grateful to them and to the stars for all they have given to WomenStories.
