Liya Razor Remembered
Liya Razor, a star in WomenStories’ Recurrence and Metastasis video, fought her breast cancer for ten years. She died in December of 2003 but was remembered and honored at the 2005 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on June 11th in Buffalo, NY. Friends of Liya’s, members of Sisters Network, and her family wore T-shirts with her name and her picture on them and they ran or walked the course with 3,800 racers. Liya's mother and two sisters traveled from New York for the day. Her son, John Garner, (pictured here with WomenStories' Executive Director, Mimi Dow) a senior at the New England Conservatory of Music and a tenor who hopes to become an opera star, sang her favorite song, “Better than I” during the ceremonies that preceded the race. After the singing John and his sister, Aliya Garner, released doves of hope from a wicker cage. As the doves soared heavenward, we imagined they might have gone to where Liya was looking down on the day’s festivities and smiling.
