WomenStories Star to be Honored
On June 11th, Liya Razor, WomenStories star, will be the honoree of the 2005 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Buffalo, NY. Liya, who died in December of 2003, is one of 5 women featured in our video, Recurrence and Metastasis. Liya’s son, John Garner, a tenor who is going into his senior year at the New England Conservatory of Music, will sing Liya’s favorite song, “Better than I” at the race. Her 11 year old daughter, Aliya Garner will also be present at the race.

Liya was a founding member of Sisters Network of Buffalo. Sisters Network is a national African American Breast Cancer Survivors’ Organization whose mission is to increase local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the African American Community. Liya was also a member of the Witness Project, a community-based organization that promotes screening and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in rural and lower income African American populations.

Liya was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 and nursing her second child. Although she was given a poor prognosis at the time, and her doctors told her she only had two years to live, she survived for ten years. She lived a rich and full life, volunteering in her children’s schools, taking family vacations and participating in the breast cancer organizations mentioned above.

WomenStories is proud of Liya Razor, and blessed to have known such a courageous and inspiring woman.
